The Trip That Couldn’t Wait: Saying Yes to Yourself.

Have you ever found yourself daydreaming about a place—seeing photos, reading stories, finding yourself dreaming and wishing for somewhere new —but every time you brought it up, the people around you hesitated? Maybe a partner, a close friend, even family. “It’s too far… too expensive… not really my thing,” they’d say. So you waited, postponing your dream for another year, another season, another “maybe next time.”

But what if you went anyway?

For a long time, I only travelled with someone else. It felt safe, familiar, and honestly, it was just the way everyone around me did things. But as life changed—relationships shifted, schedules clashed, interests drifted—I realised I was putting the places I loved on hold, hoping someone else would want to come too. The truth is, sometimes that moment never arrives.

The Quiet Courage of Going Alone

It’s not always easy to choose yourself. There’s a vulnerability in saying, “I want this”—especially when it means stepping out alone. But there’s also a deep, steady kind of courage. I remember it so clearly: I was on the couch at home, watching the Ashes being played in England. During the lunch break, almost without thinking, I started searching for flights to Japan—a place I’d always dreamed of seeing. It was as if my hands had a mind of their own. Next minute, I pressed the “book” button and it was done. I was going to Japan. Suddenly, a wave of uncertainty and self-pride washed over me—like I was finally giving myself permission to stop waiting for life to align perfectly, and just say yes to myself.

Every solo traveller’s story starts with that decision: to honour the spark of curiosity, even if it means walking your own path.

What Happens When You Go Anyway

The freedom is real—gentle, not showy. You wake up when you want, linger over coffee (tea for me!), explore the places that spark your interest. You don’t need to explain, negotiate, or justify. It’s just you, quietly getting to know yourself in a new place.

Some moments are unexpectedly comforting, as though you are wrapped in a big bear hug. There’s a quiet magic in ordering dinner for yourself for the first time, settling in, and letting yourself simply watch the world go by. People watching becomes a sport! And, yes, there are moments of loneliness too. But those pass, replaced by the comfort of your own company and the kindness you find along the way—from strangers, from small surprises, from yourself.

You’re Not Selfish—You’re Self-Honouring

Maybe you’re moving through a new season: a breakup, an empty nest, a year of rediscovering who you are. Maybe you’ve simply waited long enough. When you choose to go for yourself, you’re not just ticking a box—you’re taking yourself seriously. You’re saying, “I matter. My dreams count, too.”

Facing the Fears, Celebrating the Small Wins

Of course, there’s apprehension. There might be moments of loneliness or uncertainty—navigating a new subway system, choosing a restaurant, or simply dealing with the silence of your own hotel room. But for many, each small challenge met is a quiet celebration of self-trust.

Bring something familiar— a book or a favourite playlist—for comfort. Plan certain touchpoints into your day: a Facetime, write in your journal, bring your favourite snack. These small rituals offer reassurance, a reminder that you’re not truly alone; you’re held by your own company, and the wider world is less intimidating than it seems.

Stories Worth Sharing

One client wrote to us after her first solo trip: “I was so nervous, but on the last night, I sat at a little bar in Paris and realised I’d created something just for me. I felt strong—and free.”

Another traveller shared: “I always waited for someone to say yes to Japan. When I finally booked it myself, I discovered I could belong anywhere—especially in my own story.”

You’re Not Alone—Even When You Travel Solo

A solo journey isn’t about walking away from others; it’s about inviting yourself in. It’s about not needing permission for what lights you up.

If you’re standing at this crossroads—wanting to go, but wishing someone would join—know that it’s okay to want more. It’s okay to go anyway. I’m here with real stories, honest tips, and gentle encouragement for every step.
